As every follower of 2A and 3A Texas HS football knows, anything can happen, especially by the time we get to the Regional finals. This year is no exception.
Seven teams in the four divisions remain undefeated: New Deal, San Saba and Mason in 2A1, Falls City in 2A2, Shallowater in 3A1 and Gunter and Newton in 3A2.
Of these Lucky 7 (or outright "great") teams, Gunter and Newton, the recent champions in their division, appear destined for Arlington. So does Falls City in its division. An early pick of the other state finalists is much harder.
Our Picks to be Semi-Finalists
In 2A1, we believe New Deal, San Saba, Tenaha and Mason will advance, respectively, over West Texas, De Leon, San Augustine and Refugio.
In 2A2, our selections are: Gruver over Stratford, Hamlin over Albany, Mart over Muenster and, as noted, Falls City over Burton.
In 3A1, Shallowater ought to be able to slip by Brock, Malakoff by Atlanta, Grandview by East Chambers and Yoakum by Edna.
Lastly, in 3A2, we pick Canadian to defeat Abernathy, Gunter to eliminate Holliday, Newton to whip Daingerfield and East Bernard to end Tidehaven's late run.
The Regional Final 2018 Repeats
2A1: San Saba walloped De Leon On Nov. 9, 62-12, and way back in September, Tenaha squeaked by San Augustine, 14-10.
2A2: Gruver had few problems whipping Stratford on Nov 9, 59-28.
3A1: Edna suffered its only 2018 loss, to Yoakum, 21-17, on Oct. 26.
3A2: East Bernard defeated Tidehaven, 24-14 on October 5.
Brock is a very good and experienced team. It would be no startling surprise if the Eagles end Shallowaters's great season.
The same also goes for Tenaha and Refugio. Both have rebounded from early season losses and we don't really know how good the Tigers and the Bobcats are. By Saturday morning we'll know.
But the Fun Starts Tonight (Thursday)
Our other posts (go to main page) give the times and sites as of 8:00 am Thursday.
We strongly recommend a last-minute look for possible changes in time and place for each game.
